History of Myofascial Pain in Medical Literature

1843

“Muskelschiele” or Muscle Callous was reported in the medical literature by Froripe to identify tender spots in the muscle that were related to pain complaints.

1904

Gowers introduced the term fibrositis which attributed local tenderness in the muscle due to inflammation of fibrous tissue.

1938

Kellgren reported that many of his patients experienced referred pain in areas remote from the tender points in the muscle that were causing the pain.

1942

Janet Travell, MD reported pain that was referred by trigger points. She published 40 papers on myofascial trigger points between 1942 and 1990.

1952

Travell and Rinzler reported the pain patterns of trigger points in 32 skeletal muscles, as “The myofascial genisis of pain,” which quickly became the classic source of this information

1983

Janet Travell, MD and David Simons, MD published Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction The Trigger Point Manual Volume 1

1992

Janet Travel, MD and David Simons, MD published Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction The Trigger Point Manual Volume 2

1993

Hubbard and Berkoff reported the electromyographic activity characteristic of trigger poimts

1997

Gerwin, et al. demonstrated in a study, the reliable identification of myofascial trigger point criteria in 5 muscles

2008

Research by Chang-Zern Hong suggests that there are multiple sensitive loci in a myofascial trigger point region that are sensitized nociceptors in the myofascial trigger point region.
